What is psychotherapy with horses used for?
It is helpful in areas of relationship and personal difficulties. These can include: anger management, anxiety, bereavement, combat stress, cultural issues, depression, health-related issues, identity problems, loss, parenting issues, personal development, redundancy, self-esteem, sexual identity, sexuality, sexual abuse, spirituality, stress, trauma and work-related issues.
Why will I find this approach helpful?
It is especially helpful for those who find it hard to put thoughts and feelings into words and for those who are drawn to a therapy approach which includes physical movement and being outdoors.. It has something in common with art, music or drama therapy in that the horse experience is the way in which the issues or difficulties are approached.
I don't know anything about horses - is it for me?
Many of us have never had anything to do with horses and so might be somewhat wary. However, Martha is a skillful and supportive horse professional who will stay right beside you and show you how to approach her horses, how to stroke them, groom them, lead them and so on. If you are curious as to what it is like to be with a horse, then this is a wonderful opportunity for challenge, learning and growth.
We offer a free 30 minute meeting just so that you can come and try it out.
I have never ridden a horse - is it for me?
Many us of have never ridden and this is no bar to psychotherapy with horses as there is no riding.
Is it confidential?
Our psychotherapy work is governed by the BACP (British Association of Counselling and Psychotherapy) Code of Ethics and this includes the confidentiality clients can expect. As this is team work, the information you give will be shared between Martha and Lavinia.
I am not very fit - could I manage a session?
It will only be as strenuous as you want it to be. You might move about quite a bit in a session, or hardly at all - it will be up to you. You will be outside (and it does rain!) for up to 45 minutes in a psychotherapy session. So you need to dress for the outdoors and wear the sort of shoes or boots that you would go for a walk in.
How long will a therapy take?
Adult sesssions usually last 90 minutes; for under 18s it's usually 60 minutes And you will come for the number of sessions you think is right for you. We will help you think about what is appropriate for you. But the decision is yours.
